Odisha Government’s Major Step for Farmers, a landmark move to boost farmers' incomes and strengthen their economic standing, the Odisha government has announced a significant benefit for rice farmers. Farmers will now receive ₹3100 per quintal for their rice, which includes ₹2300 as the Minimum Support Price (MSP) and an additional ₹800 as a bonus. This amount will be transferred directly to farmers' bank accounts via the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system.
Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik emphasized that this bonus will act as input assistance to help farmers combat frequent challenges such as floods, droughts, cyclones, and pest attacks. The distribution of this bonus will commence during the State-Level Farmers’ Conference scheduled for December 8, 2024.
This announcement fulfills a key promise made during Odisha’s assembly elections. The state government had assured farmers of an additional ₹800 per quintal as a bonus on rice prices. True to its word, the government approved the proposal in its first Cabinet meeting, with the Chief Minister pledging to transfer the amount to farmers' accounts within 48 hours of the announcement.
Support Through Various Schemes: The Odisha government is running multiple schemes to uplift farmers, including the CM Kisan Yojana and KALIA Yojana, with a budget allocation of ₹1935 crore. Key assistance under these schemes includes:
Integration with PM-KISAN Scheme: Odisha’s farmers are also benefitting from the PM-KISAN scheme launched by the central government, which offers financial assistance. Combined with the CM Kisan Yojana and KALIA Yojana, farmers in the state are receiving joint support from both central and state governments.
Conclusion: The Odisha government’s steps to empower farmers economically are highly praiseworthy. By raising the procurement price to ₹3100 per quintal and introducing multiple welfare schemes, the state aims to provide financial stability, promote agricultural productivity, and improve farmers' livelihoods. These initiatives will go a long way in ensuring prosperity for farmers across Odisha.
