Sugarcane Transport

To prevent any issues for farmers while transporting sugarcane to sugar mills during the winter season in Uttar Pradesh, the Sugarcane and Sugar Commissioner has issued special instructions. These directives aim to ensure the safety of farmers and prevent potential road accidents.

Commissioner’s Guidelines for Sugarcane Transport:

Farmers are now required to install red and yellow reflector strips on their vehicles. These guidelines are applicable to tractors, bullock carts, and other vehicles used for the transportation of sugarcane.

Why is the Reflector Strip Important?

In winter, fog reduces visibility on the roads, increasing the risk of accidents. Vehicles carrying sugarcane often become invisible to larger vehicles, which poses a significant threat to road safety.

Commissioner Prabhu N. Singh stated:

• The reflector strip is visible from a distance, allowing other drivers to spot sugarcane transport vehicles on the road.
• When sugarcane is loaded, reflectors on carts or trolleys can be hidden, so it is crucial to place the strip in the right position.

Rules for Placing Reflectors on Vehicles:

1. On Tractors-Trailers:
   • Place six-inch red and yellow fluorescent strips at both corners.
2. On the Rear of Bullock Carts:
   • Paint red and yellow fluorescent paint on the iron strips.
3. On Truck Bumpers:
   • Apply fluorescent strips to the front and rear.

This step will make farmers' vehicles more visible on the road, reducing the likelihood of accidents.

Launch of Reflector Campaign: The Sugarcane Commissioner has instructed officials to begin a campaign for installing reflectors on sugarcane transport vehicles. This will be carried out in collaboration with sugar mill management and will be ensured two to three times throughout the season.

Sugar Mills’ Responsibility: All sugar mills must ensure that all sugarcane transport vehicles in their areas are equipped with reflector strips. Local assistant regional transport officers, police officers, and revenue officials will assist with this task.

Feedback System for Farmers:

The Sugarcane Commissioner has directed field officers to gather feedback from farmers at sugar mill yards regarding their experiences and problems.

• Farmers face any issues, they must be resolved promptly.
• Farmers should be informed about the department’s schemes and operations.

Sugarcane Price (2024, 25):

The following are the sugarcane prices in Uttar Pradesh:

1. Rejected variety: ₹335 per quintal
2. Regular and advanced varieties: ₹350 per quintal

The central government has fixed the Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP) of sugarcane at ₹340 per quintal.

Status of Sugar Mills:

1. Total sugar mills: 120
2. Private sector mills: 93
3. Cooperative sector mills: 24
4. State Sugar Corporation mills: 3
