Climate / Temperature: Climate and temperature play a crucial role in barley cultivation. A cool climate is favorable for its growth.

Water Demand: Barley crops have specific water requirements, particularly during sowing and the growth stages.

Soil: Fertile soil with good drainage is suitable for barley farming.

Major Varieties

  • Jyoti (K.572/10): Suitable for irrigated conditions.
  • Azad (K-125): Ideal for unirrigated land.
  • K-141: Suitable for both fodder and grain.
  • Haritma (K-560): Resistant to all major diseases.
  • Preeti (K-409): Resistant to key diseases.

Sowing of Crops:

The timing of barley sowing depends on various conditions:

  • Unirrigated: From October 20 to November 10.
  • Irrigated: Up to November 25.
  • Delayed: Until the second fortnight of December.

Suitable Time of Sowing:

The right sowing time is essential for optimal crop growth.

Field Preparation: For field preparation, use a local plow or disc harrow with 2-3 plowings.

Crop Cycle: Barley should be grown in rotation with other crops following a crop cycle to maintain soil health.

Water Management: Proper irrigation management is crucial, typically involving two irrigations during the growing season.

Weed Management: Weed control is necessary, focusing on major weeds such as wild oats and other competitive species.

Harvesting: Harvesting should be done in the morning or evening when the ears are fully ripe.

Diseases & Disease Prevention: Control of major diseases such as covered smut, leaf blight, and loose smut requires seed treatment for effective prevention.
